How it works
A pool volume calculator finds how much water a pool holds, which you need for dosing chemicals and sizing equipment. Multiply length by width by average depth for cubic feet, then convert to gallons.
Pool volume (rectangular)
Cubic feet = length × width × average depth Gallons = cubic feet × 7.48
- length, width
- pool dimensions in feet
- average depth
- (shallow + deep) ÷ 2
- 7.48
- gallons per cubic foot
Worked example
- Pool 32 ft × 16 ft
- Average depth = 5 ft
- Cubic feet = 32 × 16 × 5 = 2,560
- Gallons = 2,560 × 7.48
≈ 19,150 gallons.
Good to know
- Use the average depth, not the deepest point, for a sloped-bottom pool.
- Round pools use π·r²·depth; ovals and kidney shapes approximate with an average width.
- Accurate volume keeps chemical dosing safe — overdosing is both wasteful and harsh on swimmers.
